These instructions were applied specifically on a 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE but in theory they should work for any 4th generation Toyota Highlander (2020 through at least 2025). My "shark fin" antenna was damaged while backing up with the garage door that didn't fully opened. The antenna cover was cracked and the seal was no longer fully attached to the roof. I monitored for water leakage for a few weeks and none was apparent, until over a year later. I decided to replace the antenna cover to avoid further leaks.
You will need the following parts and tools:
- Antenna Outer Cover Kit - Toyota Genuine #86077-12060-P0 (Celestial Silver Metallic Color) - you can order the original from the online store from a nearby Toyota dealer. Just pick one that gives you a discount off MSRP. Also enter your VIN to ensure that you are getting the right part and color, specifically this part number is for color 1J9 (Celestial Silver Metallic).
- GOOACC 5PCS Auto Trim Removal Tool Kit No-Scratch Pry Tool Kit for Car Door Clip Panel & Audio Dashboard Dismantle -5PCS - or similar auto pry tool kit. I primarily used the one with metallic end from this kit.
- Egofine 46 Pieces 1/4 inch Drive Socket Ratchet Wrench Set, with Bit Socket Set Metric and Extension Bar for Auto Repairing and Household, with Storage Case - although I did not use this specific kit, all you need is a low profile ratchet with a 10mm socket to remove the screw.
- Small flat screwdriver to pry the head light lid.
- Dap 00694 2.8-Ounce Silicone Rubber Auto/Marine Sealant, Clear - optional - I used this to seal the antenna as the roof was damaged and the cover was no longer laying flat.
I found 2 videos that were useful to learn how to do this repair:
- Removing Shark Fin 4Runner Tutorial 5th Gen 2021 Toyota TRD OFF-ROAD - this is for Toyota Tundra but most instructions apply.
- How to: Replace Shark Fin Cover on Toyota Rav4 Prime - slightly longer video, but more similar to the Toyota Highlander.
Here is my step by step guide with some pictures:
1. Remove the black trim from the top back:
2. Use the metal plier to remove the 2 clips that attach the roof:
3. Next you need to remove the 3rd row center head light. On the side from the switch there are 2 small openings. You can use a small flat screwdriver to pry the lid from the head light.
4. Once you remove the lid, remove the plastic switch. You'll then see a slider and a center plastic piece that you have to push in at the same time to detach. Repeat for each side.
6. Next locate and unplug the cable that attaches to the antenna.
7. Next remove the screw the attaches to the antenna using the ratchet with the 10mm wrench.
8. Next remove the antenna cover from the top. You can see my roof was damaged during the incident.
9. Detach the existing antenna cover from the antenna hardware:
10. Attach the new antenna cover to the antenna receiver.
Next, we're going to start putting everything back in place:
1. Place the antenna cover back on the roof. If you have a similar roof damage where the antenna does no longer lay flat, you may want to consider using this DAP rubber clear sealant. Let it dry for a few hours.
2. Screw the antenna using the 10mm ratchet.
3. Plug the antenna back
4. Replace the top seat belt holder.
5. Replace the head light. Put back the switch, then put back the lid.
6. Replace the 2 gray plastic clips.
7. Replace the black liner and you're done!
